The mission of the Friends of the Albany Rural Cemetery is to foster the appreciation, preservation, and advancement of our historically significant cemetery, honoring its past while helping to ensure its future.
The Friends is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization created to support the Albany Rural Cemetery, which is on the National and State Historic Registers. Founded in 1841, this is the second largest rural cemetery in the United States, and is the final resting place of over 135,000 individuals, including: a U.S. President and many national and local politicians, as well as artists, scientists and other famous and interesting individuals.
We organize and conduct a wide range of events, including walking tours and presentations, as well as publish a quarterly newsletter for members, along with books and other walking guides.

Please join us for a walking tour through one of the cemetery's quieter and more natural areas, Middle Ridge, as we explore ARC's rich tapestry of gravestone symbols and share stories about some of the notable individuals buried here. You may have wondered about the meaning behind sculptures like an anchor, an upside-down torch, or a draped urn. Each gravestone symbol holds a unique significance, mostly stemming from the Victorian era. This tour lifts the veil on these carvings, explaining the significance behind some of the most common (and not-so-common) symbols of death and mourning.
If you register in advance, you will be contacted by email if the forecast warrants moving the date.
